The Centre has ironed out legacy issues with a number of key markets and is fixing trade hurdles, Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said.Visakhapatnam: India is set to expand export of seafood products, including shrimp to Russia, European Union, and Australia, in what would be a major relief to domestic fisheries hit hard by high US .
Speaking to ET, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said the government has ironed out legacy issues with these markets which will allow the fisheries to expand exports. Goyal said that his ministry is working closely with the Seafood Exporters Association of India to identify more export markets, evaluate trade impediments, and find solutions.
“We have recently ironed out problems with the European Union,” said Goyal. “Due to their quality control orders, the EU had not been importing Indian fish. We pressured them to solve a nine-yearold problem. Now, 102 fisheries have got approval to export to the EU,” the minister said, speaking to ET on the sidelines of the CII Partnership summit in Visakhapatnam.
He said the “good news” was that the EU was looking for seafood, especially shrimp, from India. This reflected the growing confidence in India’s food safety and quality assurance systems.“Exports to Russia will also be expanded in a big way. They (Russia) are in the process of giving final approvals to 25 fisheries. We are working actively to get more approved,” said Goyal.
