Coming off PepsiCo’s earnings report, the company announced details about beverage portfolio innovations in the protein space.
In the increasingly crowded protein market, the protein boom could be missing the point, the company cautions. As most are chasing protein grams, Pepsi is focused on outcomes and providing the right product at the right time to meet unique consumer needs, it explains
“Protein plays a vital role in satiety, metabolism, immunity, and even inflammation,” said Tara Glasgow, global chief science officer at PepsiCo, in a statement. “It’s essential at every age and life stage, helping people stay strong, feel full longer, and support their overall health.”
To redefine the protein conversation, PepsiCo is introducing three new protein products across its beverages portfolio that are rooted in consumer insights and propelled by science. These innovations span several beloved brands, each tailored to unique consumer needs and occasions, the company says.
“Most people don’t realize that it’s not just how much protein you consume ― it’s when and what type of protein that matters,” Glasgow said. “Your body can only use so much at once, so spreading protein throughout the day helps maximize its benefits.
That’s why our innovations are designed to deliver protein and other functional ingredients in the right form, at the right time, for the right person.” The innovations from Propel, Muscle Milk and Starbucks packaged coffee will each come to market in early 2026. The following are the protein innovations:
Propel will expand into protein with Propel Clear Protein, a powder mix featuring a proprietary blend of electrolytes, protein, and fiber for efficient hydration and healthy lifestyle support. Hydrating, crisp and clear, it contains no artificial flavors or sweeteners and no added color. The three-in-one benefit stack features 20 grams of whey protein to help maintain muscle mass, 3 grams of fiber to help support digestive health and electrolytes to help support hydration.
In addition to exercisers and active people, Propel Clear Protein is a new option for GLP-1 users, who often benefit from supplemental protein, fiber and electrolytes, the company says. Propel Clear Protein will be available in three flavors: Pear Apple, Watermelon Mint and Peach Ginger.
Muscle Milk, designed for athletes and active individuals focused on muscle building, will be completely reformulated, integrating ultra-filtered milk for an enhanced taste and smoother, shake-like experience. The ready-to-drink protein will be made without any artificial flavors or sweeteners and no added colors. This transformation will be supported by completely modernized packaging.
Muscle Milk Base will have 26 grams of protein and Muscle Milk Pro will contain 42 grams protein. Containing 3 grams of sugar, 200 calories in each serving, the reformulated Muscle Milk products also are a good source of calcium and vitamins A and D.
The company’s North American Coffee Partnership is launching a coffee and protein line to extend benefits beyond “wake up” and energize routines to offer coffee-first beverages that will fuel both performance and wellness goals, the company says.
Starbucks Coffee + Protein is integrating protein into the morning coffee occasion, offering functional benefits without compromising ritual. Available in Classic Caffé and Caffé Mocha, Starbucks Coffee + Protein features 100% Arabica coffee, 22 grams of protein, 5 grams of prebiotic fiber, five essential vitamins and minerals and only 2 grams sugar.
“We’re focused on delivering protein in ways that work with the body, not just focused on adding grams,” said Ram Krishnan, CEO at PepsiCo Beverages U.S., in a statement. “Whether muscle maintenance with Muscle Milk, hydration and digestive support with Propel Clear Protein, or morning wellness with Starbucks Coffee + Protein, each brand in our portfolio is designed with precision to meet the unique physiological and emotional needs of different consumers, delivering on their desired outcomes.”
