India’s frozen potato segment is emerging as a key growth engine in the frozen foods market, driven by rising demand, QSR expansion, and cold-chain growth.
India’s frozen potato products segment, led by French fries and value-added potato offerings, is witnessing rapid growth and has become one of the fastest-expanding categories within the country’s frozen foods market. The segment is currently growing at an estimated 11 per cent CAGR, driven by rising disposable incomes, changing food preferences, and the strong expansion of quick service restaurants (QSRs) and online food delivery platforms.
Strengthening their long-standing partnership, Cargill and McCain are jointly focusing on sustainable, science-driven innovation, responsible sourcing, and next-generation product solutions to support the evolving frozen foods and QSR ecosystem in India. Speaking on the sector’s outlook, Dheeraj Talreja, Vice President and Managing Director – Food South Asia, Cargill, and Mainak Dhar, Managing Director, McCain Foods India, highlighted how favourable macro-economic fundamentals, increasing digital penetration, and growing exposure to global cuisines are accelerating demand for frozen foods.
India’s steady GDP growth of over 6 per cent annually and the expected rise of nearly half the population into high- and upper-middle-income groups by 2030 are further boosting consumption of convenience and premium food formats. At the same time, the rapid growth of QSRs, cafés, and cloud kitchens—projected to grow at over 17 per cent CAGR between 2025 and 2030—is significantly increasing demand for frozen potato products.
While challenges such as uneven cold-chain infrastructure, high energy costs, and consumer misconceptions around frozen foods remain, both companies noted that sustained investments in logistics, storage, technology, and consumer awareness are gradually addressing these issues. Through advanced food safety systems, digital traceability, regenerative farming practices, and sustainability-led initiatives, Cargill and McCain aim to deepen their presence in India and support the long-term growth of the country’s frozen food sector.
