Avery Dennison introduces AD IdentiFresh™ to enhance food freshness, traceability, and sustainability in retail through smart labeling solutions.

Avery Dennison (NYSE: AVY) has introduced its AD IdentiFresh™ inlay series, a new RFID solution designed for fresh food categories including bakery, meat, deli, and produce. The inlays are part of Avery Dennison’s Optica™ Food Solutions, which provides real-time inventory visibility to help retailers and suppliers improve operational efficiency, maintain freshness, and reduce waste.

The AD IdentiFresh™ inlays feature a proprietary antenna design and use Impinj’s M800 series ICs with the latest Gen2X enhancement, delivering faster, more accurate reads even in high-moisture or densely packed environments such as meat cases. The compact form factor allows seamless integration into existing labeling workflows, supporting both supplier and in-store tagging at high volumes without operational disruption.

Mathieu De Backer, VP of Intelligent Labels Innovation at Avery Dennison, said, “By combining advanced materials science with optimized inlay design, this innovation helps retailers digitize and automate fresh food management from production to point-of-sale.”

George Dyche, VP of endpoint IC product at Impinj, added, “The Gen2X-enhanced ICs improve read performance and inventory management, helping retailers reduce labor costs and minimize food waste.”

Research commissioned by Avery Dennison highlights that meat, produce, and baked goods are the categories most affected by waste, with inventory management and overstocking contributing significantly. The global economic cost of food waste is projected to reach $540 billion by 2026.
