The U.S. National Science Foundation funds the NSF Seafood Engine to accelerate innovation, sustainable fisheries, aquaculture technologies, and workforce development across New England.
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded US$15 million to the NSF Seafood Engine, a regional innovation initiative led by the University of Rhode Island, to strengthen the seafood and aquaculture sectors across New England. The funding will support the commercialization of innovative technologies, promote sustainable seafood production, and enhance the competitiveness of the region’s blue economy.
The five-year investment aims to accelerate research, entrepreneurship, and industry collaboration across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The initiative brings together universities, seafood businesses, technology developers, government agencies, and community organizations to create an integrated ecosystem for seafood innovation.
A major focus of the programme is advancing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture technologies, including improved seafood production systems, processing technologies, supply chain solutions, seafood traceability, and climate-resilient marine practices. The initiative also seeks to improve product quality, reduce waste, and increase value addition throughout the seafood value chain.
The NSF Seafood Engine will support startups and small businesses through technology commercialization, business mentoring, and access to research infrastructure. It is expected to help bring new seafood products, processing innovations, and marine technologies from laboratories to commercial markets while encouraging private-sector investment.
Another key objective is workforce development. The programme will expand education and training opportunities in seafood processing, aquaculture, marine biotechnology, and ocean technology, helping develop a skilled workforce to meet the evolving needs of the seafood industry.
By investing in innovation, sustainability, and regional collaboration, the NSF Seafood Engine aims to strengthen New England’s position as a global leader in seafood and aquaculture. The initiative is expected to drive economic growth, improve supply chain resilience, and support the long-term development of a competitive and sustainable seafood industry.
