Multi-billion-dollar plan aims to strengthen domestic food production, expand processing capacity and build a more resilient supply chain
Canada has launched its first-ever National Food Security Strategy to build a stronger, more affordable and resilient food system while increasing domestic food production and processing capabilities. The initiative aims to reduce supply chain vulnerabilities, support food businesses and create greater opportunities for Canadian farmers and processors.
The strategy is backed by more than $3 billion in investments over 10 years and focuses on improving food infrastructure, increasing competition in the grocery sector, expanding local processing capacity and supporting innovation across the agri-food industry.
A major focus of the plan is encouraging more food to be grown and processed within Canada. The government has introduced funding initiatives to help businesses expand food processing operations, upgrade equipment and develop new capabilities across the agricultural value chain.
The strategy includes investments in food infrastructure such as terminals and distribution hubs to improve connections between farmers, processors, retailers and consumers. These measures are designed to strengthen domestic supply networks and provide more market opportunities for independent producers and food companies.
