India Exports 7 Tonnes of Bihar’s Makhana to Canada via Sea Route

First-ever sea shipment of GI-tagged Mithila Makhana strengthens India’s value-added agricultural exports and opens new global opportunities for Bihar’s farmers.

India has successfully exported 7 metric tonnes of Bihar’s famous Mithila Makhana (fox nuts) to Canada through the sea route for the first time, marking a significant milestone in the country’s agricultural export journey. Facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the shipment showcases the growing international demand for India’s value-added food products.

The consignment, comprising two containers carrying 7 metric tonnes of flavoured makhana, was dispatched through Mundra Port in Gujarat to ZKV Foods in Canada. The export represents an important step in promoting Bihar’s premium agricultural produce in global markets while expanding the state’s portfolio of processed food exports.

Mithila Makhana, which received its Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2022, is cultivated predominantly in Bihar, with the state contributing nearly 90% of India’s total makhana production. Known for its high protein, fibre, and antioxidant content, makhana has gained popularity worldwide as a healthy snack and superfood, creating new export opportunities for Indian producers.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, the shipment is expected to enhance income opportunities for farmers by enabling direct access to international buyers and reducing the role of intermediaries. Officials believe exports of value-added makhana products will improve price realization while strengthening Bihar’s position as a leading supplier of premium fox nuts in global markets.

The export initiative aligns with the Government of India’s strategy to promote GI-tagged agricultural products and increase exports of processed foods. By focusing on branding, quality enhancement, and international market access, APEDA continues to help Indian farmers and food processors expand their presence in overseas markets.

The successful shipment of Bihar’s makhana to Canada highlights the growing global appeal of India’s traditional food products. As international demand for nutritious and value-added snacks continues to rise, the initiative is expected to create new export opportunities, boost farmer incomes, and further strengthen India’s processed food export sector.
