Uttarakhand’s Malta Orange Set for Premium Organic Market with Certification Drive

The state government is introducing organic certification for Malta-growing regions to enhance branding, improve farmer incomes, and unlock premium domestic and export opportunities.

Uttarakhand’s renowned Malta orange is poised to enter India’s premium organic fruit market as the state government launches an organic certification initiative for its key cultivation regions. The move is expected to strengthen the fruit’s market position, improve returns for farmers, and create new opportunities in both domestic and international markets.

Malta oranges are widely cultivated across several hill districts, including Almora, Nainital, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Tehri, Pauri, and Dehradun. Grown in the state’s cool climate and higher altitudes, the fruit is known for its naturally sweet taste, high juice content, and distinctive citrus aroma.

Although Malta oranges are largely produced using traditional farming methods with minimal chemical inputs, the absence of formal organic certification has prevented growers from marketing the fruit as organic. As a result, farmers have generally received conventional market prices despite following near-natural cultivation practices.

Under the new initiative, selected Malta-growing clusters will undergo an organic certification process that verifies farming practices, production inputs, and product traceability. Once certified, the fruit is expected to command premium prices in organised retail outlets, specialty organic stores, and export markets where consumer demand for certified organic produce continues to rise.

The certification programme also aligns with Uttarakhand’s broader efforts to promote sustainable agriculture, natural farming, and value-added horticultural products. Officials believe that stronger branding, improved quality standards, and better market linkages will enable local growers to move beyond traditional wholesale markets and access higher-value supply chains.

In addition to increasing farmer incomes, the initiative aims to establish Uttarakhand Malta as a premium organic citrus brand recognised for its quality and authenticity. If successfully implemented, the programme could pave the way for expanded exports while enhancing the competitiveness of one of the state’s signature horticultural products.
