Blumar Unveils Modernization Project for Its Fish Hatchery in the Los Lagos Region

In line with its commitment to operational excellence, Blumar announced the submission of an Environmental Impact Declaration (DIA) to Chile’s Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) as part of the modernization process of its Puyehue Fish Hatchery, which has been operating in the municipality of Puyehue, Los Lagos Region, since 2023.

The project involves a US$20 million investment and includes the construction of additional incubation and fry-rearing facilities, as well as smoltification tanks, which will support increased annual smolt production. The new facilities will incorporate state-of-the-art technology, enabling the hatchery to operate more efficiently and sustainably while maintaining high environmental standards.

Water Efficiency

Since it began operations approximately three years ago, the fish hatchery has sourced water from the Pilmaiquén River. After use, the water undergoes an advanced filtration and disinfection process before being returned to the river.

The new facilities planned as part of this modernization phase include the implementation of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), specifically for the early-stage fish rearing units. Unlike traditional systems, this technology allows water to be continuously reused and biologically filtered within the rearing facilities, achieving greater water efficiency. This ensures optimal environmental stability, contributing to fish welfare and enabling an even more sustainable use of water resources.

In addition, the water treatment system will be strengthened through the installation of eight high-efficiency rotary drum filters, designed to treat all the water used in the operation before it is returned to the river. “This technology aims to ensure that the water returned to the river strictly complies with water quality parameters and current environmental regulations,” explained Wido Martínez, Blumar’s Freshwater Production Manager.

More Jobs and Stronger Community Ties

The construction and operation of the new facilities at the fish hatchery will also strengthen ties with the local community. In line with Blumar’s community engagement policy, priority will be given to hiring local suppliers and service providers, while maintaining ongoing dialogue and engagement with the community.

The fish hatchery currently operates with a team of 26 employees, most of whom are residents of the municipality of Puyehue. Once the project reaches full operational capacity, the facilities are expected to generate approximately 75 direct and indirect jobs, prioritizing local hiring.

Over its more than three years of operation, the fish hatchery has focused on strengthening its ties with the surrounding communities through cooperation initiatives that promote local development.

A key pillar of this engagement is the implementation of various initiatives aimed at supporting education at different institutions in Pilmaiquén, including a kindergarten, a school, and a technical high school, as well as promoting workforce development and engagement with local communities.

These efforts include professional internship programs, facility visits, training sessions, and community engagement activities, reflecting Blumar’s active presence and ongoing commitment to regional development and creating opportunities for local residents.

“We aim to build lasting relationships that not only stimulate the local economy but also introduce younger generations to a sustainable industry, allowing them to envision their professional future without having to leave their communities,” emphasized Wido Martínez.
