Mowi opens its first salmon processing plant in Thailand, strengthening its Asia presence and expanding value-added seafood processing capacity.

Norwegian salmon major Mowi has strengthened its presence in Southeast Asia by opening its first processing plant in Thailand through a strategic supply partnership with CP Axtra, a subsidiary of Thailand’s CP Group. The facility was officially launched on 28 January 2026.

As part of the agreement, Mowi will supply a wide range of salmon products to Makro and Lotus retail outlets, along with Thailand’s expanding foodservice sector. The partnership aims to cater to both retail and B2B customers, supporting the growing demand for premium and sustainably farmed seafood in the region.

Product development under the collaboration will include salmon fillets and portion cuts tailored for B2B clients. The partners are also planning to introduce ready-to-eat sashimi, packed using modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to ensure freshness and extended shelf life.

According to the Norwegian Seafood Council, salmon processing plant Norway exported around 25,000 tonnes of salmon and 8,400 tonnes of trout to Thailand in 2025, with a total value of NOK 2.8 billion. Thailand ranked as Norway’s second-largest salmonid market in Asia, after China, highlighting the country’s growing importance in the global seafood trade.
