New potato storage facility worth US$2.4 million opens in Kostanay region

A modern potato storage facility has been launched in the village of Bayshuak, Kostanay region, Kazakhstan. With a capacity of 6,000 tons and a project cost of ₸1.2 billion (€2.4 million), it is among the largest in the region.

The facility is fully automated, from sorting and packaging to climate-controlled storage. Ventilation and packing systems were supplied from Germany and the Netherlands, ensuring high-quality preservation and minimal losses.

Kostanay region is a key potato producer in northern Kazakhstan. The Beimbet Mailin district remains the leader: last year, local farms harvested 8,000 tons from 300 hectares, supplying both domestic markets and neighboring Uzbekistan.

Farmers say the new concrete-built storage is unique for Kazakhstan, where only a few such facilities exist. “It was designed to maximize storage capacity on a compact site while minimizing product loss,” said agronomist Oleg Skaskevich.

Thanks to the new storage, local producers plan to double potato planting areas, supported by Bayshuak’s strategic location at a major transport hub. This allows fast delivery not only within the Kostanay region but also to other parts of Kazakhstan.

Authorities note that demand for modern vegetable storage is growing. In the coming years, two more facilities for potatoes and vegetables are planned for the district, further strengthening supply stability and export opportunities.
