Delhaize Invests €120 Million in Fresh Produce Warehouse and Logistics

The Belgian supermarket chain will expand its logistics capacity with a new fresh produce distribution centre in Zellik, creating 130 permanent jobs.

Delhaize is investing €120 million to expand its logistics operations in Belgium, including the construction of a new distribution centre for fresh products in Zellik. The investment is expected to create 130 permanent jobs as the retailer strengthens its supply chain to support future growth.

The supermarket chain is continuing to expand its store network while also seeking to encourage existing customers to visit its stores more frequently. According to CEO Alexandros Boussis, these developments could eventually place pressure on the capacity of the current logistics network and its existing work organisation.

The planned fresh produce warehouse is intended to increase Delhaize’s ability to handle and distribute fresh food products. Expanding logistics infrastructure will be important as the retailer develops its store network and responds to changing customer demand.

The investment also includes changes to the company’s labour organisation. While the project is expected to generate new permanent employment, Delhaize is also preparing a labour reform as part of the wider logistics expansion.

The development highlights the growing importance of efficient cold-chain and fresh-food logistics in supermarket operations. For retailers, additional distribution capacity can help support store expansion, improve product availability and manage the operational demands associated with fresh produce.

Delhaize’s latest investment follows other developments at its Zellik logistics hub, where the company has continued to strengthen its operational infrastructure. The new project reflects its broader strategy of investing in logistics capacity to support the next stage of business growth.
