The U.S. Department of Agriculture has purchased 187,500 cases of peeled and deveined shrimp for distribution through federal food and nutrition assistance programmes.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded nearly $19.8 million in contracts for shrimp to eight Gulf Coast processors, supporting domestic seafood procurement for federal food and nutrition programmes. The awards cover 187,500 cases of peeled and deveined shrimp, according to the USDA purchase award information reported by IntraFish.
The procurement was carried out under Section 32, a federal purchasing programme used by the USDA to acquire agricultural and food products for distribution through nutrition assistance initiatives. The USDA had announced its intention to purchase wild-caught shrimp in August, alongside products including canned peaches, grape juice, fresh mandarins, pork, prunes, raisins and walnuts.
The latest award represents the shrimp component of that broader procurement programme. Eight processors received contracts, with the total value reaching $19,755,803. The purchases are intended for domestic food programmes, creating an additional institutional market for U.S. shrimp processors and suppliers.
However, not all of the shrimp included in the solicitation was awarded. IntraFish reported that 49,500 cases remained unawarded, leaving a portion of the planned procurement without contracts in the latest round.
The procurement comes as the U.S. shrimp industry continues to navigate changing supply, pricing and import conditions. Domestic Gulf shrimp producers have faced competition from imported shrimp, while government purchasing programmes can provide an additional channel for domestically produced seafood.
For processors, large institutional purchases can provide predictable demand and support production planning. The latest contracts also connect Gulf Coast shrimp production with federal food assistance programmes, directing seafood products into domestic nutrition channels.
The USDA’s Section 32 programme is used periodically for a range of agricultural and seafood products. Its August 2026 announcement specifically included wild-caught shrimp, with subsequent solicitations and awards being published through the agency’s procurement system.
The shrimp contracts therefore represent a significant federal purchase for the U.S. seafood sector, while also providing a market for Gulf Coast processors. The awarded volume of 187,500 cases will enter domestic food programmes, while the unawarded portion indicates that additional procurement opportunities may remain depending on future USDA purchasing decisions.
