Piyush Goyal Leads Strategic Meeting to Boost India’s Global Agriculture Presence

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal chaired a meeting on Thursday to discuss strategies aimed at improving farmers’ livelihoods, strengthening India’s presence in the global agriculture sector, and expanding agricultural cooperation with African countries.

During the meeting with MJ Khan, Chairman of the Indian Chamber of Food & Agriculture, discussions focused on enhancing farmer welfare, promoting India’s agricultural expertise internationally, and identifying long-term solutions for food security through stronger global partnerships.

Goyal said the discussions also explored ways to deepen collaboration with African nations and create new opportunities for agricultural growth and knowledge sharing. He added that the initiatives are intended to support sustainable development in the agriculture sector while improving the economic conditions of farmers.

In a separate meeting, the minister reviewed plans to develop a roadmap for securing Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) approvals for Indian agricultural and fisheries products in overseas markets. The initiative aims to increase exports, strengthen the food processing sector, and create better income opportunities for farmers and fisherfolk.

SPS approvals relate to international standards that ensure food, plant and animal products meet safety and quality requirements before entering foreign markets. Officials believe improved compliance with these standards will help Indian agricultural products gain wider global acceptance and enhance the country’s export competitiveness.
