Amul launches AI assistant ‘Sarlaben’ to boost dairy farmer productivity

Amul launches AI assistant ‘Sarlaben’ to enhance dairy farmer productivity, improve milk yields, and support data-driven farm management.

Amul has taken a major step in digital transformation with the launch of Sarlaben, an AI-powered virtual assistant designed to enhance productivity and decision-making for dairy farmers across Gujarat. The initiative aims to deliver round-the-clock, personalised guidance to milk producers, helping bridge information gaps at the village level.

The AI assistant is integrated with Amul’s existing digital ecosystem, including the Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS) and the Pashudhan application. Through this integration, Sarlaben can offer customised recommendations on key aspects of dairy farming such as animal health care, vaccination planning, medical interventions, nutrition management and breeding practices.

In addition, the platform will share updates on government schemes and subsidy programmes, ensuring farmers have timely access to relevant policy-related information.

Sarlaben will be available via the Amul Farmer mobile application, which already has a user base exceeding one million. To ensure inclusivity, farmers using feature phones or landlines can also interact with the AI assistant through voice calls in Gujarati, enabling easy adoption even in low-connectivity areas.

Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), said the AI system draws on decades of verified and structured data, allowing it to provide reliable insights and support faster, more informed decision-making. He added that the initiative also supports national goals of empowering women milk producers through technology.

The intelligence behind Sarlaben is built on Amul’s extensive cooperative IT framework, backed by more than 50 years of operational data. This includes detailed milk procurement records, veterinary treatment histories for millions of cattle, and large volumes of artificial insemination data.

Additional inputs such as satellite-based fodder assessment and periodic cattle census data further strengthen the AI’s analytical capability. Together, these datasets enable the platform to deliver accurate, farm-specific guidance, marking a significant advancement in the digital evolution of India’s cooperative dairy sector.
