Belagavi wholesale fish traders seek dedicated market space

With fresh fish from Goa, Karwar and coastal parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka arriving in Belagavi in huge quantities, wholesale fish traders have requested the district administration to allot a suitable place for a wholesale fish market in Belagavi city.

After a brief meeting on Monday, a delegation of the Wholesale Fish Merchants Association submitted a memorandum to Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Roshan, in the presence of Belagavi North MLA Asif (Raju) Sait and Police Commissioner Bhushan Borse.

“Belagavi city is one of the topmost wholesale markets in South India, supplying huge quantities of fresh and dry fish to retail traders from North Karnataka, South Maharashtra and neighbouring areas. Ideally located, Belagavi receives a large quantity of fish from all coastal areas of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. During peak season, we receive about 100 tonnes of fish that arrives here early morning every day,” the memorandum states.

However, like the wholesale vegetable and fruit market, there is no properly allotted wholesale fish market in the city, and the wholesalers are left at the mercy of Belagavi Cantonment Board’s parking space opposite Bharatesh College, which is temporary and unsuitable for the trade.

The wholesale fish traders have now requested the district administration to allot a suitable place for a wholesale fish market in Belagavi city. Deputy Commissioner Roshan and MLA Sait assured the delegation of allotting a suitable place after making a proper survey.

Association members comprising Wholesale Fish Merchants Association President Girgol Rodrigues, Vice President Cyril Carvalho, Altaf Padekar, Louis Carvalho, Yusuf Bargir, Munna Madar, and Nazeem were present at the meeting.
