Salmon Farming Could Add 1% to Atlantic Canada’s GDP by 2035

Expansion of the salmon farming sector could strengthen economic activity across Atlantic Canada and create new opportunities for regional growth.

Salmon farming could increase Atlantic Canada’s gross domestic product by around 1% by 2035, according to the Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association (ACFFA). The forecast highlights the potential economic contribution of the region’s farmed salmon industry as producers and stakeholders look at opportunities for future expansion.

The sector plays an important role in Atlantic Canada’s seafood economy, with salmon farming supporting activity across farming, processing, transportation, feed, equipment and other related services. Growth in production could therefore generate wider economic benefits beyond the farms themselves.

According to the ACFFA, further development of salmon farming could contribute to regional economic growth over the coming decade. The projection comes as the industry continues to assess its position within Atlantic Canada’s broader food and seafood production system.

The outlook also places attention on the regulatory environment surrounding salmon aquaculture. As the sector considers future investment and expansion, regulatory decisions will remain an important factor influencing production capacity and long-term business planning.

Atlantic Canada has established itself as an important salmon farming region, with the industry connected to domestic and international seafood markets. Increased production could strengthen the region’s position in the global farmed salmon supply chain while supporting employment and associated businesses.

The projected 1% GDP contribution by 2035 underlines the broader economic importance of aquaculture to Atlantic Canada. Continued investment, responsible production practices and a supportive operating environment could help the sector capture further opportunities in the growing global demand for salmon.
