Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on farmers to increase the supply of locally grown food and help make healthier choices more affordable for consumers. Speaking at the opening of the 2026 National Agriculture Show at Subrail Park in Labasa, Rabuka said agriculture has an important role to play in improving the country’s food supply and public health.
The Prime Minister said high prices for locally produced food can encourage consumers to turn to cheaper processed products. Increasing the availability and affordability of fresh agricultural products could therefore help households access healthier food options while supporting domestic farmers.
Rabuka’s remarks come as Fiji continues to address high rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The government sees stronger agricultural production and better access to nutritious foods as part of the wider response to these health challenges.
Improving local food production could also strengthen Fiji’s domestic food supply by creating greater connections between farmers, markets and consumers. A stronger local agricultural sector can provide more consistent access to locally produced fruits, vegetables and other fresh foods while creating additional opportunities for farmers.
