FSSAI Crackdown Drives Food Brands to Revise Labels and Packaging Claims

FSSAI Crackdown Drives Food Brands to Revise Labels and Packaging Claims
Food companies update product labels, ingredient declarations, and marketing claims following FSSAI enforcement to improve transparency and regulatory compliance.

India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is prompting major food brands to revise their product labels and packaging cFSSAIlaims following a series of regulatory notices targeting misleading declarations. The enforcement drive is encouraging manufacturers to improve transparency and ensure product labels accurately represent ingredients, nutritional information, and product characteristics.

Several companies have already modified packaging after receiving notices from the regulator. Changes include removing or revising claims such as “100% Natural,” “Fresh,” “Premium Chocolate,” and other marketing statements that FSSAI found could mislead consumers or lacked sufficient regulatory support. The updates are intended to align product packaging with the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations.

According to FSSAI, food labels must clearly describe the nature of the product and should not exaggerate quality, composition, or health benefits. Brand names and promotional language cannot replace accurate product descriptions or create a misleading impression about ingredients or nutritional value.

The regulator’s recent enforcement campaign has extended across multiple food categories, including dairy products, bakery items, confectionery, beverages, chocolate spreads, and nutraceuticals. Companies have been asked to justify product claims and update packaging where necessary to comply with Indian food labelling standards.

Industry experts believe the crackdown will encourage greater investment in regulatory compliance, label verification, and packaging review processes. Food manufacturers are increasingly strengthening internal quality systems to ensure product labels accurately reflect formulation, ingredient sourcing, and permitted claims before products reach the market.

The latest action highlights FSSAI’s growing emphasis on truthful product communication and informed consumer choice. As enforcement becomes more rigorous, food businesses are expected to place greater focus on compliant packaging, transparent labelling, and scientifically substantiated claims, strengthening consumer confidence across India’s packaged food industry.
