Indonesia’s Tilapia Gains Momentum in European Seafood Market
Indonesia’s tilapia industry is rapidly emerging as a major player in the global seafood trade, with increasing demand from European and United States markets driving export growth.

The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has identified tilapia as one of the country’s most promising export commodities, supported by strong international acceptance and strict quality standards.

According to the ministry, Indonesian tilapia has gained recognition among global consumers due to its mild taste, high protein content, and versatility in food preparation. Often referred to as the “Chicken of the Sea,” tilapia is considered a healthy seafood option because it contains low saturated fat along with Omega-3, Omega-6, and essential vitamins and minerals.

To strengthen export capacity, the Indonesian government is expanding tilapia production through several large-scale aquaculture initiatives. These include the development of the Saline Tilapia Cultivation Area (BINS) in Karawang and the revitalisation of fish farming ponds along the northern coast of Java. Authorities say these projects are aimed at boosting production while ensuring compliance with international sustainability and food safety standards.

Indonesia’s tilapia exports have reportedly achieved “zero rejection” status in several overseas markets, reflecting the industry’s focus on certifications and traceability. Producers are increasingly adopting globally recognised standards such as HACCP, ISO 22000, BAP, ASC, and BRC certifications to meet the strict import requirements of European and American buyers.

One of the leading exporters, Regal Springs Indonesia, has successfully expanded into the United Kingdom market, supplying tilapia products to restaurant and pub chains. Industry officials noted that sustainability certifications, particularly from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), have played a key role in improving market access and consumer trust.

The growing popularity of tilapia in Europe is also supported by its competitive pricing compared to traditional whitefish species such as cod and trout. Indonesian exporters believe this advantage, combined with sustainable farming practices and reliable quality, could further strengthen the country’s position in the global seafood market.

Indonesia is currently among the world’s largest tilapia producers and aims to significantly increase its global market share over the coming years through technology upgrades, sustainable aquaculture practices, and stronger export infrastructure.
