Odisha Records 12% Growth in Seafood Export Value, Strengthening Its Position in Global Markets
Expansion in shrimp exports, improved aquaculture practices, and growing international demand drive strong performance in the state’s seafood sector.

Odisha has registered a significant increase in seafood exports, with the value of outbound shipments rising by nearly 12% during the latest fiscal year. The growth underscores the state’s expanding role in India’s marine products industry and reflects rising demand for high-quality seafood in international markets.

According to official data, seafood exports from Odisha reached approximately ₹5,800 crore during FY 2024-25, compared with around ₹5,180 crore in the previous year. The increase was largely driven by robust exports of frozen shrimp, which continues to be the state’s leading seafood export product and a major contributor to India’s overall marine exports.

The state has witnessed steady expansion in aquaculture activities, particularly in coastal districts where shrimp farming has become an important source of income for thousands of farmers. Improved farming techniques, better disease management practices, and increased adoption of quality standards have helped producers enhance productivity and meet the stringent requirements of overseas buyers.

Officials attribute the strong export performance to coordinated efforts across the seafood value chain, including support for farmers, expansion of processing infrastructure, and improvements in cold-chain logistics. Enhanced traceability systems and adherence to international food safety norms have also strengthened the competitiveness of Odisha’s seafood products in global markets.

Major export destinations for Odisha’s seafood include the United States, China, Japan, the European Union, and several Southeast Asian countries. Growing consumer demand for shrimp and other value-added seafood products in these markets has provided a strong boost to export volumes and revenues.

Industry stakeholders believe the sector still has considerable room for growth. Investments in modern processing facilities, sustainable aquaculture practices, and export-oriented infrastructure are expected to further enhance Odisha’s position as a leading seafood-exporting state. The government is also focusing on increasing value addition and expanding market access to diversify export opportunities.

With favorable coastal resources, a growing aquaculture base, and rising international demand, Odisha’s seafood industry is well positioned to sustain its growth momentum and contribute significantly to the state’s economy in the coming years.
