US$67 million integrated dairy project will house 30,000 cows, boost fresh milk production, and support Indonesia’s drive toward milk self-sufficiency.
Indonesia has launched the development of what is expected to become its largest integrated dairy farm, marking a major step in the country’s strategy to reduce its dependence on imported milk and strengthen domestic dairy production. The project is part of the government’s broader initiative to achieve long-term milk self-sufficiency through large-scale investments in modern dairy farming.
The new facility is being developed by Global Dairi Bersama (GDB), a subsidiary of the Savoria Group, with an investment of Rp1.2 trillion (approximately US$67 million). Located in Brebes, Central Java, the project will span 710 hectares and accommodate up to 30,000 dairy cows, making it one of the largest dairy operations in Southeast Asia.
Designed as a fully integrated dairy complex, the project will include fresh milk production, milk processing facilities, animal feed manufacturing, biogas generation, and organic fertilizer production. Once fully operational, the farm is expected to produce 180,000 tonnes of fresh milk annually, equivalent to roughly 20% of Indonesia’s current domestic milk production.
Indonesia currently imports 3.6–3.8 million metric tonnes of milk each year, meeting around 80% of national demand through imports. To address this gap, the government estimates that the country requires at least 20 modern large-scale dairy farms and is actively encouraging both domestic and international investors by streamlining licensing and regulatory approvals.
The project is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s dairy value chain by increasing domestic milk availability, supporting food processing industries, creating employment opportunities, and promoting sustainable farming practices through renewable energy generation and efficient resource utilization. The integrated approach is also expected to improve supply chain resilience while reducing reliance on imported dairy products.
With the launch of this mega dairy farm, Indonesia is taking a significant step toward building a more self-reliant dairy industry. The investment reflects the country’s commitment to expanding modern dairy infrastructure, boosting local milk production, and supporting long-term growth in the food and dairy processing sectors.
