Centre engages industry stakeholders to design an expanded Production-Linked Incentive programme focused on innovation, value addition, exports, and strengthening India’s food processing ecosystem.
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has initiated consultations with industry stakeholders to shape the next phase of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for the food processing sector. The discussions are aimed at developing an expanded incentive framework that promotes domestic manufacturing, encourages innovation, enhances exports, and strengthens India’s agricultural value chains.
The consultation brought together representatives from leading food processing companies, industry associations, exporters, startups, and other stakeholders to gather recommendations for the next phase of the programme. The government is seeking industry inputs to ensure that the revised scheme addresses emerging challenges while supporting long-term sectoral growth and global competitiveness.
According to the Ministry, the upcoming Food Processing PLI Scheme is expected to place greater emphasis on innovation, product diversification, value addition, technology adoption, and export-oriented manufacturing. The revised framework will also focus on strengthening linkages between farmers, processors, and markets to improve income opportunities across the agricultural supply chain.
As part of the consultation process, the government has formed five thematic working groups covering key areas including branding and exports, processing technologies, investment promotion, value chain development, and regulatory issues. These groups will submit recommendations to help shape the structure and implementation of the next phase of the incentive programme.
Officials indicated that the expanded scheme will aim to improve India’s competitiveness in global food markets by encouraging investments in advanced processing facilities, modern manufacturing technologies, and high-value food products. The government also intends to create a more enabling environment for MSMEs and startups operating in the food processing ecosystem.
The current PLI scheme for the food processing industry has supported investments across segments such as ready-to-eat foods, marine products, processed fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and innovative food products. Building on these achievements, the next phase is expected to broaden the scope of incentives while aligning with evolving consumer demand and international market opportunities.
The latest consultations underscore the government’s commitment to making India a global hub for food processing. By incorporating industry feedback into the next phase of the Food Processing PLI Scheme, the Centre aims to accelerate manufacturing growth, increase value addition, expand exports, and strengthen the country’s position in the global processed food industry.
