Strategic port infrastructure and Andhra Pradesh’s aquaculture ecosystem strengthen India’s position in global seafood markets
Visakhapatnam Port has strengthened its position as a key hub for India’s seafood exports, handling nearly half of the country’s marine product shipments and playing a crucial role in connecting Indian seafood producers with international markets. The port’s growing contribution highlights the importance of efficient logistics infrastructure in supporting India’s expanding seafood trade.
The port’s performance has been supported by the strong aquaculture ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh, particularly the production and processing of vannamei shrimp, which remains one of India’s leading seafood export products. The availability of processing facilities, cold chain infrastructure, and proximity to major production regions has helped Visakhapatnam become a preferred export gateway for seafood companies.
India recorded a significant growth milestone in seafood exports during FY 2025–26, exporting 19.72 lakh metric tonnes of marine products valued at ₹73,890.46 crore (US$8.46 billion). Frozen shrimp continued to be the largest contributor, while the United States and China remained among the major international markets for Indian seafood.
Visakhapatnam Port handled a substantial share of these exports, shipping seafood products including frozen shrimp, frozen fish, and other marine products to global destinations. The port’s performance reflects the combined strength of Andhra Pradesh’s seafood processing sector and India’s growing export capabilities.
Industry stakeholders believe that continued investment in cold storage, processing technology, traceability systems, and sustainable aquaculture practices will further enhance India’s competitiveness in global seafood markets. Improved infrastructure and value-added processing are expected to create additional opportunities for exporters and seafood producers.
With rising global demand for quality seafood and India’s focus on expanding marine exports, Visakhapatnam Port is expected to remain a critical pillar in strengthening the country’s seafood supply chain and international trade network.
