Egypt plans to import frozen poultry to boost domestic supply and stabilize prices ahead of the Ramadan demand surge.
Egypt has decided to import significant volumes of frozen poultry and poultry products from multiple international sources in an effort to boost domestic supply and curb rising prices ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. The announcement was made jointly by the Ministry of Supply, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Mostaqbal Misr Agency for Sustainable Development, highlighting the government’s proactive approach to managing food availability during peak consumption periods.
The decision followed a high-level meeting between Supply Minister Sherif Farouk, Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk, and Bahaa El-Ghanam, Chairman of the Mostaqbal Misr Agency. During the discussions, the officials agreed on a coordinated strategy to secure the country’s poultry requirements and ensure smooth market operations. The collaboration was described as a “food security triangle,” aimed at integrating efforts across institutions to regulate supply chains and stabilize prices.
According to the agreement, the initial consignments of frozen poultry are expected to arrive before the start of Ramadan. The imported products will include whole chickens as well as popular cuts such as thighs and breasts, catering to diverse consumer preferences. These products will be distributed nationwide to ensure adequate availability across urban and rural markets.
To make the poultry affordable for consumers, the government plans to sell the imported supplies at reduced prices through an extensive network of fixed and mobile outlets operated by the participating entities. These outlets will be spread across all governorates, ensuring that citizens can access essential food items conveniently during the high-demand festive season.
Officials emphasized that this initiative forms part of broader state efforts to strengthen strategic food reserves, maintain market balance, and safeguard price stability during and beyond Ramadan. The three organizations also confirmed ongoing coordination and monitoring to ensure swift distribution, while additional measures are being prepared to further increase the supply of basic commodities and ease the financial burden on households.
