Instamart Brings Meghalaya Pineapples to Bengaluru, Expanding Northeast Sourcing

The quick-commerce platform is strengthening direct sourcing from Northeast farmers while bringing premium Meghalaya pineapples to urban consumers in Bengaluru.

Instamart has expanded its fresh-produce sourcing network into Northeast India, beginning with premium pineapples from Meghalaya, which are now being made available to consumers in Bengaluru. The initiative strengthens the connection between farmers in the Northeast and India’s growing urban retail market.

The pineapples are sourced directly from the Jirang Organic Farmer Producer Company and transported to Bengaluru by air. The direct sourcing model is intended to improve market access for growers while supporting better price realisation for their produce.

Meghalaya’s pineapples are known for their sweetness, aroma and high Brix levels, giving them a distinctive position in the premium fresh-fruit segment. Increasing their availability in major urban markets can help create stronger demand for the state’s horticultural products.

The move forms part of broader efforts to establish direct market linkages for Northeast farmers and reduce dependence on traditional layers of the agricultural supply chain. Meghalaya has also been pursuing partnerships with digital commerce platforms to expand national market access for products such as pineapples, ginger and other agricultural produce.

Earlier this year, Meghalaya farmers also shipped 10 tonnes of premium pineapples from North Garo Hills to Delhi, demonstrating growing efforts to connect producers directly with major Indian markets. The programme aims to reduce intermediary dependence and improve returns for growers.

For the food and retail sector, the initiative highlights the growing role of quick-commerce platforms in connecting regional agricultural products with metropolitan consumers. Such sourcing networks can create new opportunities for premium fruits while strengthening farm-to-market supply chains.

The expansion of Meghalaya pineapples into Bengaluru therefore represents more than a retail launch. It provides a new distribution channel for Northeast agriculture and could encourage wider adoption of direct sourcing models for regional specialty foods across India’s organised food-retail sector.
