Indonesia Unveils Milk Hub Initiative to Support Free Nutritious Meals Program
Community-based dairy hubs aim to boost local milk production, strengthen farmer incomes, and reduce reliance on imports

The Indonesian government has announced plans to establish a network of small-scale milk hubs to support the country’s Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, a flagship initiative designed to improve nutrition among students and other beneficiaries while promoting domestic agricultural development. The hubs are expected to play a key role in ensuring a stable supply of fresh milk for the nationwide program.

Under the plan, milk hubs will be integrated with MBG kitchens and developed close to dairy-producing regions. The facilities will serve as collection, processing, and distribution centers, enabling local dairy farmers to supply milk directly to the program while improving efficiency across the supply chain. The government believes the initiative will help create a more sustainable and localized dairy ecosystem.

The strategy aligns with Indonesia’s broader efforts to strengthen food security and reduce dependence on imported dairy products. Officials have emphasized that the MBG program should prioritize locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, creating new market opportunities for domestic producers and encouraging investment in the dairy sector.

Beyond supporting nutritional goals, the milk hub initiative is expected to generate economic benefits for rural communities by providing dairy farmers with more reliable demand and improved market access. The government hopes that stronger linkages between farmers, cooperatives, processors, and MBG kitchens will stimulate growth across the dairy value chain while increasing local milk production capacity.

Indonesia continues to expand the MBG program as part of its national nutrition agenda, with millions of beneficiaries already being served through thousands of nutrition fulfillment units across the country. The milk hub concept is viewed as an important step toward ensuring long-term supply stability while supporting the government’s objectives of improving nutrition, empowering local producers, and strengthening agricultural self-sufficiency.
