Mobile Feed and Milk Testing Lab to Boost Dairy Services Across Punjab
The new laboratory-on-wheels will provide free feed and milk testing, ration formulation, and advisory services to livestock farmers across Punjab, strengthening dairy productivity and feed safety.

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, has secured a grant of ₹1.55 crore from Kemin Industries South Asia to establish a state-of-the-art Mobile Feed and Milk Testing Laboratory (MFML). The initiative aims to deliver scientific testing and advisory services directly to livestock farmers across Punjab, helping improve feed quality, milk safety, and dairy productivity.

The mobile laboratory will function as a fully equipped laboratory-on-wheels capable of testing feed, fodder, silage, aflatoxins, and milk samples. By operating across different zones and dairy hubs in Punjab, the facility will offer free testing services, ration formulation support, and expert guidance to farmers who often have limited access to advanced diagnostic facilities.

According to university officials, the project represents a significant public-private partnership aimed at strengthening Punjab’s dairy sector. The initiative is expected to help farmers make informed decisions regarding animal nutrition, improve livestock health, enhance milk quality, and increase overall farm profitability through technology-driven solutions.

The programme will also focus on farmer education and awareness. Outreach activities will cover feed safety, mastitis prevention, silage management, and the adoption of modern dairy technologies. These efforts are designed to equip dairy farmers with practical knowledge that can improve productivity while reducing risks associated with poor-quality feed and milk contamination.

Researchers at GADVASU believe the mobile testing facility can serve as a model for evidence-based livestock extension services and farmer-centric support systems. Based on the project’s performance and impact, the university and Kemin Industries plan to explore the deployment of additional mobile laboratories with the long-term objective of extending coverage to all districts of Punjab.

The initiative comes at a time when the dairy sector is increasingly focusing on quality assurance, feed efficiency, and scientific livestock management. By bringing testing and advisory services directly to farms, the project is expected to improve accessibility, strengthen the dairy value chain, and support sustainable growth in Punjab’s livestock sector.
