Nestlé Highlights Local Sourcing and Advanced Food Processing Behind Maggi Production
Company Reinforces Commitment to Nutrition, Food Safety, and Support for Local Farmers Through Locally Sourced Ingredients

Nestlé Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to local sourcing, food safety, and sustainable food production, highlighting the role of locally sourced agricultural raw materials and modern food-processing technologies in the production of its iconic Maggi seasoning cubes. The company emphasized that strengthening local supply chains can enhance nutrition, support farmers, and drive value addition within Nigeria’s food industry.

During a media tour of its Agbara manufacturing facility in Lagos, Nestlé explained that Maggi seasoning cubes produced in Nigeria are made primarily from locally sourced soya beans obtained from Northern Nigeria. The company noted that these ingredients undergo a controlled fermentation process that mirrors traditional African food preparation techniques used in condiments such as iru, dawadawa, and ogiri.

Nestlé also addressed common misconceptions surrounding the production of seasoning cubes, clarifying that the flavors used in Maggi are derived from fermented soya beans rather than artificial chemicals. According to company representatives, the production process involves cleaning, softening, fermenting, extracting flavors, drying, blending, and compressing the ingredients into cubes under strict quality-controlled conditions.

The company stated that its manufacturing operations are highly automated, minimizing direct human contact with the product and helping maintain consistent food safety, quality, and hygiene standards. This approach enables Nestlé to ensure product consistency while reducing contamination risks throughout the production cycle.

Nestlé further highlighted the historical origins of the Maggi brand, which was developed to help address nutritional challenges by making meal preparation faster, easier, and more affordable for families. Today, the company continues that mission by producing products designed to contribute to everyday nutrition. Maggi seasoning cubes sold in Nigeria are fortified with essential micronutrients, including zinc and iodine, helping address dietary deficiencies among consumers.

The company reiterated its ongoing commitment to food safety, quality assurance, and increased use of locally sourced agricultural inputs, underscoring the importance of partnerships with local farmers and suppliers in building a more resilient food ecosystem. The Agbara manufacturing facility also contributes significantly to local employment and economic development through its extensive workforce and supply-chain network.
