Thailand and US Strengthen Cooperation on Produce Pesticide Testing and Food Safety
Thai FDA and US agricultural officials enhance collaboration on pesticide residue testing, border inspections, and food safety standards to support safe agricultural trade.

Thailand and the United States have strengthened their collaboration on produce pesticide testing through high-level discussions aimed at enhancing food safety, improving regulatory alignment, and supporting the safe trade of fresh agricultural products. The initiative brings together the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Assisting Specialty Crop Exports (ASCE) programme to reinforce monitoring of imported fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

The bilateral meeting, held at the Thai FDA’s One-Stop Service Centre in Bangkok, focused on harmonising border inspection systems and strengthening mutual understanding of each country’s food safety framework. Officials discussed ways to improve pesticide residue surveillance while ensuring that imported produce complies with established food safety standards.

A major area of cooperation involves standardising sampling procedures at ports of entry, laboratory testing methods for pesticide residues, and enforcement protocols for shipments that exceed Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs). By aligning these technical procedures, both countries aim to improve consistency in inspections and enhance consumer confidence in imported agricultural products.

The discussions also explored opportunities for long-term scientific collaboration, including data sharing, exchange of regulatory expertise, and access to compliance information. Thai officials believe that closer cooperation with US regulatory agencies will strengthen domestic inspection capabilities while supporting more efficient monitoring of imported produce.

According to Dr. Rungruethai Muanprasitporn, Deputy Secretary-General of the Thai FDA, effective coordination between food safety authorities is essential for maintaining public confidence in the food supply chain. The US delegation, in turn, outlined its regulatory approach to monitoring pesticide residues and ensuring compliance in agricultural exports.

The collaboration comes as Thailand continues to enhance its pesticide residue control systems to meet increasingly stringent international food safety requirements. Improved testing, traceability, and regulatory cooperation are expected to facilitate smoother agricultural trade while ensuring that consumers receive safe, high-quality fresh produce.

The strengthened partnership reflects the growing importance of international cooperation in food safety as global trade in fresh produce expands. By aligning inspection procedures, laboratory standards, and regulatory practices, Thailand and the United States aim to protect public health while promoting transparent and science-based agricultural trade.
