FSSAI Introduces Mandatory Vegan Logo for Approved Food Products
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has mandated that all approved vegan food products marketed in the country must display a standardized vegan logo on their packaging from July 1, 2027.

The requirement is part of the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026, introduced to enhance transparency and enable consumers to easily identify vegan products.

Under the revised regulations, vegan foods are defined as products that do not contain any ingredients, additives, flavorings, enzymes, processing aids, or other substances of animal origin. The rules also prohibit animal testing for vegan products, except in cases where such testing is specifically required by a regulatory authority.

The approved vegan logo consists of a stylized “V” integrated with a sprouting leaf within a green square border, accompanied by the word “VEGAN.” FSSAI has laid down detailed guidelines covering the logo’s design, size, color specifications, and placement to ensure consistency across all vegan food packaging.

To facilitate compliance, Food Business Operators (FBOs) have been granted a transition period until July 2027. Companies manufacturing both vegan and non-vegan products will be required to either operate separate production lines or implement stringent cleaning and sanitation measures to prevent cross-contamination.

The regulations also extend to imported vegan food products. Importers must ensure that products bear the prescribed vegan logo and are supported by certification from recognized authorities in the country of origin verifying their vegan status.

FSSAI believes the initiative will bring greater clarity to consumers, establish uniform labeling standards across the industry, and support the expanding market for plant-based foods in India. The move is expected to strengthen consumer trust while encouraging the growth of the country’s vegan food sector.
