Sudha Dairy’s Gaya plant to boost Bihar dairy sector

Sudha Dairy’s Gaya Plant to Boost Bihar Dairy Sector
Sudha Dairy inaugurates its new Gaya plant, strengthening Bihar’s dairy sector, increasing capacity, and supporting local milk producers.

Bihar’s dairy sector is poised for a structural transformation as Sudha Dairy, operating under COMFED, advances plans for a ₹50.27 crore greenfield dairy processing facility in Gaya. With a proposed capacity of 2 lakh litres per day (LPD), the new unit is expected to strengthen milk procurement, expand value addition, and support rural livelihoods across Bihar’s Magadh region.

Addressing Capacity Gaps in Milk Processing

Currently, Sudha Dairy’s existing Gaya facility processes around 60,000 LPD, despite sourcing milk from five surrounding districts. This imbalance has restricted procurement growth and limited the system’s ability to handle surplus milk during peak production periods. The upcoming 10-acre plant at Bhindas village in Wazirganj block aims to resolve these constraints by tripling processing capacity and streamlining milk handling operations.

The project also includes a milk powder manufacturing unit, providing a critical mechanism to manage seasonal fluctuations. By converting excess milk into storable products, the facility is expected to enhance inventory management while offering greater payment stability to milk producers.

Enhancing Farmer Earnings Through Product Diversification

In addition to liquid milk, the Gaya plant will produce paneer, curd, lassi, peda, gulab jamun and milk powder, marking a shift towards higher-value dairy products. This diversification is expected to improve overall realisations within the cooperative supply chain. For dairy farmers across the five districts of the Magadh region, the project is likely to ensure steadier procurement, minimise distress sales, and improve income visibility.

The initiative aligns with broader national objectives aimed at improving farmer incomes through value-chain integration and organised market access, rather than relying solely on price interventions.

Employment Generation and Local Economic Impact

The upcoming facility is also expected to contribute to rural employment generation. While direct jobs will be created in processing, quality assurance and logistics, indirect employment opportunities are anticipated across milk collection, transportation, packaging and allied services. The plant is likely to offer alternative livelihood avenues for rural youth in and around Gaya, closely linked to the agricultural economy.

Strategic Importance for Bihar’s Dairy Industry

From a wider industry perspective, the investment supports Bihar’s transition from a milk-deficit state to a value-oriented dairy economy. Strengthening cooperative infrastructure and expanding product portfolios could improve Sudha Dairy’s competitiveness against private players while enabling wider market penetration in eastern India. Once operational, the Gaya facility could serve as a model for decentralised dairy industrial development in other under-served regions.
