Three-month enforcement campaign will focus on FSSAI licensing, hygiene standards and compliance across food businesses in the state
Tamil Nadu’s Food Safety Department has launched a three-month statewide enforcement drive to bring more eateries and food businesses under closer regulatory scrutiny and ensure compliance with food safety requirements.
The campaign will focus on restaurants, hotels, catering establishments, bakeries, food manufacturing units and other businesses involved in preparing, processing, storing or selling food. Officials will also check whether establishments hold valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licences or registrations.
As part of the initiative, food safety teams are expected to conduct inspections and verify licensing documentation, hygiene practices, food storage conditions and other mandatory requirements. Businesses found operating without the necessary FSSAI approval may be directed to complete the licensing process in accordance with regulations.
The department’s campaign is aimed at strengthening food safety compliance across the state and encouraging food businesses to maintain better standards throughout their operations. Particular attention is expected to be given to establishments handling food on a large scale and businesses serving consumers directly.
Officials will also assess areas such as cleanliness, food handling practices, storage facilities and the overall condition of premises. The exercise is intended to improve compliance rather than focus only on enforcement, with food businesses being encouraged to follow prescribed safety procedures.
FSSAI licensing and registration are important components of India’s food safety regulatory framework. Food businesses are required to obtain the appropriate approval based on the nature and scale of their operations, helping authorities maintain greater oversight of the food supply chain.
The three-month campaign is expected to provide the department with a clearer picture of compliance levels among food establishments across Tamil Nadu. It could also encourage more unregistered businesses to enter the formal food safety system.
For restaurants, food manufacturers and other operators, the initiative highlights the importance of maintaining valid documentation and following established food hygiene and safety practices as part of day-to-day operations.
The drive is expected to strengthen consumer confidence while supporting a more organised and compliant food services and processing sector in Tamil Nadu.
