Global Packaging Industry Expands Efforts to Cut Food Waste
The SAVE FOOD Initiative has announced a new partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) to strengthen global efforts aimed at reducing food waste through sustainable packaging and improved supply chains.

The collaboration will focus on packaging innovation, food protection, recycling solutions and efficient transport systems to minimise food losses across the supply chain. The initiative also plans to expand training programmes, industry cooperation and awareness campaigns ahead of interpack 2026 in Germany.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), nearly one-third of food produced worldwide is lost or wasted every year. Industry experts believe better packaging technologies can help extend shelf life, improve storage conditions and reduce spoilage during transportation.

UNIDO stated that the partnership will mainly target food losses occurring during processing, storage and distribution stages, particularly in developing regions where logistics and cold-chain infrastructure remain limited.

The alliance highlights the growing role of sustainable packaging in improving food security, reducing waste and supporting global circular economy goals.
