On the occasion of National Milk Day, Purabi Dairy, one of Northeast India’s leading dairy cooperatives, introduced its first traditional Indian sweet products — Purabi Kalakand and Purabi Milk Cake. The launch marks the company’s entry into the mithai segment as it continues to diversify its dairy offerings.
The newly launched sweets will initially be available at Purabi Parlour in Panjabari, Purabi milk booths across Guwahati, and selected retail outlets in the city. The products are being manufactured by the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd (WAMUL) and marketed by North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL), a joint venture between the Assam government and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
National Milk Day is celebrated every year to honour Verghese Kurien, known as the architect of India’s White Revolution, and to recognise the contribution of the dairy industry to the country’s development.
Speaking about the launch, NEDFL Managing Director Satya Brata Bose said the addition of traditional sweets is a natural extension of Purabi’s trusted dairy brand. He noted that the company aims to provide consumers with fresh and hygienically prepared sweets while expanding its presence in the dairy market.
WAMUL Managing Director Sameer Kumar Parida stated that the new product line is expected to create additional opportunities for dairy farmers by increasing milk procurement and improving farmer incomes. He added that the initiative supports Assam’s broader efforts to strengthen its dairy sector and rural economy.
During the state-level National Milk Day celebrations held at the College of Veterinary Sciences auditorium in Khanapara, the Assam government also recognised five dairy farmers associated with Purabi Dairy for their contribution to the sector. Farmers from Bongaigaon, Hojai, Darrang and Nagaon were honoured for adopting progressive dairy farming practices.
Purabi Dairy officials highlighted that continuous support for farmers, improved processing capabilities and expanding retail operations remain central to the cooperative’s long-term growth strategy and Assam’s dairy development goals.
